Vietnam War Hero Sgt. Maj. John Canley to be Awarded Medal of Honor
Communication Directorate
July 9, 2018 | 1:08
Sgt. Maj. John Canley will become the 298th Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
President Donald J. Trump called Canley July 9 to congratulate him.
As a gunnery sergeant during the Vietnam War, Canley took command of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, after his company commander was wounded during the Battle of Hue City. He led his Marines while saving lives and eliminating enemy threats over several days. He was originally awarded a Navy Cross for his actions. It is being upgraded to a Medal of Honor.
(U.S. Marine Corps video edited by Cpl. Jamie Arzola)
