NAVY M&S STANDARDS
The Navy M&S Standards Program supports the Department and the Fleet by improving Naval capabilities in the areas of analysis, training and acquisition through modeling and simulation (M&S) standards.
The mission is to advance the Navy's development and application of M&S and data by identifying, coordinating, influencing and promoting a common set of standards that are: endorsed by the proper authorities; widely accepted by the community, both technically and socially; and easier to use than to deviate from.
The objectives are to ensure that appropriate M&S standards are available when needed for Navy M&S development, acquisition, deployment, and life-cycle support; that the necessary infrastructure is present and applied to the DoD M&S Standards Process; and a strategy is identified and established for achieving future Navy M&S Standards evolution.
The Navy M&S Standards Program continues to evolve to address Community Needs and meet the Navy M&S Standards Mission and Vision. Activities include: the identification, review and resolution of community M&S Standards needs; the execution of the DoD Common M&S Standards Process; the transition to the new DoD Standards Vetting Tool (SVT); the strengthening relationships with Government and Industry M&S programs; and continuing Cross-Service Collaboration and Coordination.
The M&S Standards Vetting Tool (SVT) is a web-based tool used to track, discuss, and vote on Modeling and Simulation standards nominations. Any individual may nominate a new M&S standard requirement by submitting a Standards Requirement Document (SRD).
The term "Standard" is applied in the broadest context to include procedures, practices, processes, techniques, data, and algorithms. A potential standard may, but not necessarily, be already recognized by a standards organization such as ISO or IEEE.
If a specific standard, accepted by the M&S community, is later approved as a government or DoD standard, it will be identified as being approved by a higher authority.
